Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to clarify the validity and reliability of FIPS(face interval pain scale) with Korean children. The subjects were 112 1st and 2nd year primary school students and 62 kindergarden children in Seoul. The study was conducted two times one week interval over 20days period from 5th Nov., 1991 to 25th Nov., 1991. McGrath P A(1985)¡¯s face interval pain scale that contains 5 face interval cards and weight box scale is one of numeral scale that contains from one to five boxes cards were used to measure. To figure out the subject¡¯s ability to use the face pain scale and weight box scale, statistical frequency was employed. To determine the difference in the rated pain intensity of face interval scale and weight box scale, Pearson correlation Coefficient was employed. To compare the difference in the rated pain intensity of face interval scale and weight box scale in the subject¡¯s memory of pain in the past, t-test was employed. To compare the difference in the rated pain intensity of the face interval scale and weight box scale according to subject¡¯s general characteristics, ANOVA and t-test were used. The findings were as follows : 1. The subject¡¯s sho could correctly use the face interval scale were 288(83%) with 5 face interval scale card method, 296(85%) in 3 times 2 face interval scale card method. 2. Correlation Coefficients were between each level card of face interval scale and weight box scale were r=0.23 -0.679, P=0.000. 3. There was no statistical differences in rating of the intensity of the FIS and WBS(r=0.927). 4. The difference in the rating of pain intensity with children¡¯s general characteristics were related to age, grade(primary school students and kindergarden children), and diseases but not to sex. 5. Item reliability was ¥á=0.9157 with face interval scale and weight box scale. Test-retest reliability was supported but the coefficient was low level. Kappa Index=0.31, p<0.01(FIPS). Kappa Index=0.41, p<0.05(WBPS). It was concluded that the FIPS can be used to measure pain as an effective tool for Korean children.
